Detailed explanation-1: -In India, contract labourers are protected by the Contract Labour Regulation and Abolition Act, 1970. A contract labourer is defined in the Act as one who is hired in connection with the work of an establishment by a principal employer through a contractor.

Detailed explanation-2: –(1) A contractor shall be responsible for payment of wages to each worker employed by him as contract labour and such wages shall be paid before the expiry of such period as may be prescribed.

Detailed explanation-3: -(b) a workman shall be deemed to be employed as “contract labour” in or in connection with the work-of:-an establishment when he is hired in or in connection with such work by or through a contractor, with or without the knowledge of the principal employer. S.

Detailed explanation-4: -contract labour, the labour of workers whose freedom is restricted by the terms of a contractual relation and by laws that make such arrangements permissible and enforceable. The essence of the contract labourer’s obligation is his surrender for a specified period of the freedom to quit his work and his employer.
