Detailed explanation-1: -The limit on exportable quantity comes amid the Union government’s efforts to rapidly scale up its ethanol-blending programme. India on Saturday allowed 6 million tonne of sugar to be exported during 2022-23, a move aimed at restricting unlimited overseas shipments and ensuring domestic availability.

Detailed explanation-2: -The 2022-23 sugar export policy announced on November 5 allowed exports of 60 lakh tonnes of the sweetener on a quota-basis till May 31. Further quantities for export would be allowed after assessing the domestic production. Sugar season begins from October to September.

Detailed explanation-3: -In this regard, the government has decided to allocate sugar mill-wise export quota if 6 million tonne for the export of 2022-23. All grades of sugar, raw, white as well as refined can be exported up to the extent of quantity mentioned.

Detailed explanation-4: -Sugar exports from India, one of the world’s major sugar producing nations, stood at 11.2 million tonnes in the 2021-22 marketing year. AISTA has made an initial projection of sugar output to be lower at 35.8 million tonnes during the 2022-23 marketing year, from a record 36.5 million tonnes in the previous year.
