Detailed explanation-1: -INS Karanj, India’s 3rd Scorpene submarine, commissioned by Indian Navy. The Navy has inducted two submarines of the same class-the INS Kalvari and INS Khanderi-from Mazagaon Docks Limited (MDL’s) where the INS Karanj was also built.

Detailed explanation-2: -The Scorpene-class submarines are being built by the Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL). The delivery of three submarines namely – INS Khanderi, INS Kalvari and now Karanj-reaffirmed India’s membership in the exclusive group of submarine building nations.

Detailed explanation-3: -INS Karanj is the third Kalavari-class submarine to be commissioned into the Navy. The diesel-electric submarines based on the Scorpene design are also referred as Scorpene class submarines.

Detailed explanation-4: -INS Vela, fourth Scorpene-class submarine, commissioned into Indian Navy. The submarine was commissioned in the presence of Navy chief Admiral Karambir Singh.
