Detailed explanation-1: -The airport was inaugurated by then Minister of Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu and Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan.

Detailed explanation-2: -The Kannur International Airport project was first proposed in 1997 and received approval from the Kerala Government in 1998. The Government of Kerala appointed Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) as the main agency to implement the project.

Kannur International Airport started its commercial operations on 9 December 2018, becoming the 4th international airport in Kerala, the only State in the country to have 4 international airports.
