Detailed explanation-1: -Loans amounting to over ₹10.09 lakh crore have been written off by scheduled commercial banks in the past five financial years but the process of recovery of dues from the NPA (non performing asset) accounts is an on-going process, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Lok Sabha on December 19, 2022.

Detailed explanation-2: -In the last five financial years, the PSBs have made an aggregate recovery of ₹4,80,111 crore from NPA accounts and upgradation of NPAs of ₹1,45,356 crore,” said the minister.

Detailed explanation-3: -"As per inputs received from the RBI, scheduled commercial banks have written off an amount of ₹10,09,511 crore during the last five financial years,” Sitharaman said during Question Hour.

Detailed explanation-4: -At the bank group level, gross NPA ratios of PSBs may swell from 6.5 per cent in September 2022 to 9.4 per cent in September 2023, whereas it will go up from 3.3 per cent to 5.8 per cent for private banks, and from 2.5 per cent to 4.1 per cent for foreign banks, under the severe stress scenario, the RBI said.
