Detailed explanation-1: -A LIZARD SEVERS its tail as a self-defence mechanism in order to distract its predator – this is known as autotomy (literally from the Greek ‘self’ and ‘sever’) or self-amputation. Lizards are born with a line of weakness in their tail, technically called a fracture plane.
Detailed explanation-2: -Lizards losing their tails when they are pulled by a predator is well known. This self-amputation is called autotomy. The severed tail continues to wiggle for about 30 minutes.
Detailed explanation-3: -Many species of lizard can release or drop their tails when danger is near. Lizards like the green iguana and bearded dragon can do this. When they drop their tail, it continues to wiggle and squirm. This confuses the predator while the lizard gets away!
Detailed explanation-4: -Many lizards and some snakes have the ability to voluntarily break off the tail in a process called autotomy in an effort to escape from a predator (see Figure 70-3). They have the ability to regenerate the lost portion of the tail.
