Detailed explanation-1: -A bone scan is used to: Diagnose a bone tumor or cancer. Determine if a cancer that began elsewhere in your body has spread to the bones. Common cancers that spread to the bones include breast, lung, prostate, thyroid, and kidney.
Detailed explanation-2: -Your bone cells (called osteoblasts) make more bone. It is this new bone activity (metabolism) that is seen on the bone scan. The radioactive substance goes to areas of bone damage and shows spots where your bone cells are trying to fix the damage.
Detailed explanation-3: -What Abnormal Results Mean. An abnormal scan will show “hot spots” and/or “cold spots” as compared to surrounding bone. Hot spots are areas where there is an increased collection of the radioactive material. Cold spots are areas that have taken up less of the radioactive material.
Detailed explanation-4: -Fractures. Arthritis. Paget’s disease of bone. Cancer originating in bone. Cancer that has metastasized to bone from a different site. Infection of the joints, joint replacements or bones. 04-Mar-2022
