Robin could barely see through the thick burlap bag that had been thrust rudely over her head. She could hear her breath coming in ragged gasps, and the sack was filling up with warm, heavy air from her uneven breathing. Her heart hammered in her chest, even as she tried to remain calm. Think, think, think. The zipties around her wrists cut into her skin, cutting off circulation and making her hands feel tingly. She had to try to break free somehow. Suddenly, the car came to a shuddering halt. She knew that she would only have one chance. She braced herself against the floor of the trunk, legs coiled and ready to kick out at whoever opened the door she could dimly feel with her bare feet. Later that day, Robin sat around sipping a latte with her friends at the little cafe down on the corner. Janey was laughing and holding her sides. “Oh my gosh, you guys, that was, like, so real. So real.” Where do they find people for that job? Mine was breathing heavily the whole time. So creepy. Korben, that whole ‘real life kidnapping’ thing was your best idea ever. So much better than the haunted house last year.” The sunlight shone down through the trees and onto the little patio, making everything look golden and safe, but Robin didn’t feel safe. As she watched her friends laughing in the bright October sun, a cool breeze, the first sign of winter, gave her a chill down her spine. The game had been too real, too real by far, and she was unsure if she would ever feel safe again. For what purpose does the author use setting details in this passage?
