Geoffrey Chaucer was born about 1343, he belonged to a rich family (the son of a wine merchant).He received an excellent education, became a diplomat and travelled to the continent. In 1373 he travelled to France and Italy, where he became interested in Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio and extended his readings in Latin to Virgil.He was also appointed to the office of Controller of the Customs for the port of London and became a Member of Parliament for Kent.He was a bourgeois, his diplomatic activities gave him the opportunity to observe humanity from a privileged perspective.He died in 1400 and was the first poet to be buried in Westminster Abbey.
