When a snails shell is tapped it retreats into it. The more you tap the shell the longer it takes to retreat and eventually it stops altogether, why is this an advantage to the snail?

Detailed explanation-1: -Warning. Never pick up a snail by its shell, as this can damage the muscle that attaches the body to the shell. If this muscle, called the mantle, is damaged, death can result.
