Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1829. He believed that more people more white men, not Native American’s African Americans or women-should have the right to vote. His attempts to include more lower and middle class Americans in the political process is known as Jacksonian Democracy. Jackson reformed voting rules in the Western states by doing away with the requirement that you had to be a property owner to vote, though this requirement remained in place in Eastern states. Jackson’s changes resulted in increased voters turnout, a new frontier voice in American politics and a renamed political party (the Democrats) Jackson also brought new powers to the presidency. He used his veto power at will to shape national politics as he saw fit, which set certain precedents for powerful presidents to come.
