He helped to overthrow the Girondins after the Montagnards became dissatisfied with the changes the Girondins made to the French government, which became a constitutional monarchy in 1791 after King Louis XVI signed the French Constitution of 1791.

Behind the leadership of Robespierre, the Jacobins instituted a state of “Terror.” Under this new rule of law, they would arrest, and often execute, anyone suspected of treason.
