Detailed explanation-1: -The basic law for levy and collection of customs duty is Customs Act, 1962. On Imports, goods are allowed to be entered India only if custom is paid. Similarly in case of exports, goods are allowed to be exported outside India only if custom duty is paid.

Detailed explanation-2: -(1) This Act may be called the Customs Act, 1962. (2) It extends to the whole of India 1[and, save as otherwise provided in this Act, it applies also to any offence or contravention thereunder committed outside India by any person.]
