Detailed explanation-1: -The Progressive Wave Theory was propounded by William Whewell in 1883. According to the theory-Tidal waves are generated in the southern ocean in the southern hemisphere under the influence of the tide-producing force of the moon. These waves are called Primary waves which move from east to west.

Detailed explanation-2: -The first theory which attempted to explain the tides in the ocean was the equilibrium theory developed by Newton (1687). In order to get an idea regarding the effect of the tide producing forces on the ocean’s water mass, Newton assumed an ideal ocean of equal depth and covering the entire earth.
