Concept note-1: -Explanations for Confederate defeat in the Civil War can be broken into two categories: some historians argue that the Confederacy collapsed largely because of social divisions within Southern society, while others emphasize the Union’s military defeat of Confederate armies.

Concept note-2: -After the fall of Richmond, the Confederate capital, on April 2, 1865, officials in the Confederate government, including President Jefferson Davis, fled. The dominoes began to fall. The surrender at Appomattox took place a week later on April 9.

Concept note-3: -Appomattox County, VA | Apr 9, 1865. Trapped by the Federals near Appomattox Court House, Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to Union general Ulysses S. Grant, precipitating the capitulation of other Confederate forces and leading to the end of the bloodiest conflict in American history.

Concept note-4: -General Robert E. Lee, who was leading the Confederacy, surrendered to the Union leader, General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865. The surrender at Appomattox, Virginia, officially ended the Civil War in America, which had taken high death tolls on citizens of both sides.
