Concept note-1: -The effect of this was to end the war in Virginia and to trigger a wave of surrenders across remaining Confederate territory. The surrender at Appomattox Court House marked the end of the Civil War.
Concept note-2: -After four bloody years of conflict, the United States defeated the Confederate States. In the end, the states that were in rebellion were readmitted to the United States, and the institution of slavery was abolished nation-wide.
Concept note-3: -The Battle of Gettysburg marked the turning point of the Civil War. With more than 50, 000 estimated casualties, the three-day engagement was the bloodiest single battle of the conflict.
Concept note-4: -The reason for the battle is not fully known. Some say that Union Colonel Theodore H. Barrett desired “a little battlefield glory before the war ended altogether.” Others say he needed more horses to get his men home and decided to steal them.
Concept note-5: -Contents. The Battle of Gettysburg, fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863, is considered the most important engagement of the American Civil War. After a great victory over Union forces at Chancellorsville, General Robert E. Lee marched his Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania in late June 1863.
