Why was the Battle of Vicksburg considered to be a turning point of the Civil War?

(A) It allowed the Confederacy to move soldiers and supplies more effectively.

(B) ** It split the Confederacy and allowed the Union to gain control of the Mississippi River.

(C) It provided an escape route for slaves to move into western territory.

Concept note-1: -Vicksburg’s strategic location on the Mississippi River made it a critical win for both the Union and the Confederacy. The Confederate surrender there ensured Union control of the Mississippi River and cleaved the South in two.

Concept note-2: -The Battle of Gettysburg ended the Confederates’ last major invasion of the North and is viewed by some as the war’s turning point. The Confederate loss of Vicksburg was perhaps more important because it opened the way for the North to seize control of the entire Mississippi River, cutting the Confederacy in half.

Concept note-3: -Siege of Vicksburg by Kurz and Allison The capture of Vicksburg ultimately led to the Confederacy being split into two, cutting off the western Confederate states of Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas from the rest of the Confederacy.
