Concept note-1: -The states created from the territory – Ohio (1803), Indiana (1816), Illinois (1818), Michigan (1837), Iowa (1846), Wisconsin (1848), and Minnesota (1858) – were all free states.
Concept note-2: -Kansas entered the union as a “free state, ” because of the Kansas-Nebraska Act that allowed the residents to decide if their state would allow slavery.
Concept note-3: -the North, region, northern United States, historically identified as the free states that opposed slavery and the Confederacy during the American Civil War.
Concept note-4: -Considered one of the most important legislative acts of the Confederation Congress, the Northwest Ordinance also protected civil liberties and outlawed slavery in the new territories.
