EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -On February 4, 1861, the seven states that had seceded by this point convened and created the Confederate States of America under the leadership of Jefferson Davis.

Concept note-2: -SECESSION. By February 1861, seven Southern states had seceded. On February 4 of that year, representatives from South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana met in Montgomery, Alabama, with representatives from Texas arriving later, to form the Confederate States of America.

Concept note-3: -Abraham Lincoln became the United States’ 16th President in 1861, issuing the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy in 1863.

Concept note-4: -The victory of Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 presidential election triggered cries for disunion across the slaveholding South.

Concept note-5: -By early February, three months after Lincoln’s election, and a month before his inauguration, seven states had left the Union. These states agreed to send representatives to Montgomery, Alabama, to form a new government.
