Concept note-1: -The Battle of Appomattox Court House started during the early morning hours of April 9, 1865. By the afternoon of the same day, General Robert E. Lee, commander of all Confederate forces, surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant.

Concept note-2: -The site is historically significant for its association with the final battle of the Civil War and Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865.

Concept note-3: -Confederate soldiers would be immediately paroled and allowed to return home. They would be given rations and in some cases transportation. They would not go to prison and would not be prosecuted for treason. Surrender would be the way to end the war quickly and with the least amount of bloodshed.
