Concept note-1: -The Battle of Antietam remains the bloodiest single day in American history. The battle left 23, 000 men killed or wounded in the fields, woods and dirt roads, and it changed the course of the Civil War.

Concept note-2: -Washington County, MD | Sep 17, 1862. Antietam, the deadliest one-day battle in American military history, showed that the Union could stand against the Confederate army in the Eastern theater.

Concept note-3: -Why was Antietam so deadly? Advanced technology, unwise tactics, and terrible decision-making. The combination of new rifles that could be shot with great accuracy from far away and old-fashioned battle lines led to unprecedented deaths in the Battle of Antietam (and in the Civil War in general).

Concept note-4: -Number of casualties in major battles in the American Civil War 1861-1865. Of the ten bloodiest battles of the American Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg in early July, 1863, was by far the most devastating battle of the war, claiming over 51 thousand casualties, of which 7 thousand were battle deaths.
