Concept note-1: -Rather than destroy his army and sacrifice the lives of his soldiers to no purpose, Lee decided to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia. Three days later, a formal ceremony marked the disbanding of Lee’s army and the parole of his men, ending the war in Virginia.

Concept note-2: -Surrenders, paroles, and amnesty for many Confederate combatants would take place over the next several months and into 1866 throughout the South and border states. Not until 16 months after Appomattox, on August 20, 1866, did the President formally declare an end to the war.

Concept note-3: -Beginning Peace and Reunion. On April 9, 1865, the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House, Virginia signaled the end of the nation’s largest war.

Concept note-4: -It’s one of the most momentous events in American history: Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, which effectively ended the Civil War, although other southern forces would still be surrendering into May.
