EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -A Union naval expedition using ironclads (May–June 1862) to subdue the Confederate batteries failed, as did an attempt to take the city by land from the north by Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman (December 1862) and an attempt by Grant to cut a canal around Vicksburg that would divert the river (February–March 1863).
Concept note-2: -Sherman, worked his siege strategy using troops on land and gunboats. He used frontal assaults, artillery bombardments, and even dug under the Confederate earthworks to place explosives.
Concept note-3: -The Siege of Vicksburg was a major victory for the Union during the Civil War. The Union Army surrounded the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi and eventually took control.
Concept note-4: -Grant hoped to secure control of the Mississippi River for the Union. By having control of the river, Union forces would split the Confederacy in two and control an important route to move men and supplies. The last major Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River was the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
