Concept note-1: -Grant (1822-85), at the battles of Shiloh (1862), Vicksburg (1863) and Chattanooga (1863). In the spring of 1864, Sherman became supreme commander of the armies in the West and was ordered by Grant to take the city of Atlanta, then a key military supply center and railroad hub for the Confederates.

Concept note-2: -William T. Sherman began battling the Confederate Army of Tennessee. At stake was Atlanta, major manufacturing center and railroad hub. Sherman had 110, 000 men in three armies around Chattanooga.

Concept note-3: -Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Sherman intended to advance on Atlanta, Georgia, from his station in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Concept note-4: -On November 15, 1864, U.S. forces led by Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman burned nearly all of the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia.
