EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -That is the idea Lincoln refers to in this section of the speech: The Civil War was testing whether the United States, which was founded on liberty and equality, could survive.

Concept note-2: -Slavery, Lincoln stated, was the reason for the war: One eighth of the whole population were colored slaves. Not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the Southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest.

Concept note-3: -The Gettysburg Address. President Lincoln delivered the 272 word Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863 on the battlefield near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
