“Four score and 7 years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation ____ “A score is twenty of something. Another way to say the quote above is:

(A) ** 87 years ago our ancestors created a new country in America

(B) 7 years ago our nation scored a new continent

(C) 107 years ago our ancestors brought new freedoms to the continent

Concept note-1: -Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that “all men are created equal.” Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure.

Concept note-2: -Literally, “87 years ago” (score sense: “group of 20”) the beginning of the Gettysburg Address made on November 19, 1863, by United States President Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865).

Concept note-3: -So “fourscore and seven years ago” would have been what date? Abraham Lincoln was referring to 1776, the date we declared independence from tyranny. He goes on to say “our fathers, ” not our forefathers.
