Concept note-1: -The charge was repelled by Union rifle and artillery fire, at great loss to the Confederate army . Lee led his army on a torturous retreat back to Virginia. Between 46, 000 and 51, 000 soldiers from both armies were casualties in the three-day battle, the most costly in US history.

Concept note-2: -The number of soldiers who died between 1861 and 1865, generally estimated at 620, 000, is approximately equal to the total of American fatalities in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, combined.

Concept note-3: -Union casualties in the battle numbered 23, 000, while the Confederates had lost some 28, 000 men–more than a third of Lee’s army. The North rejoiced while the South mourned, its hopes for foreign recognition of the Confederacy erased.

Concept note-4: -The Civil War had the highest number of casualties PER DAY of any US war in history (599 per day). The Battle of Gettysburg lasted 3 days with an average of 17, 037 casualties PER DAY!

Concept note-5: -The Most Deadly Battle In History: Stalingrad Running from August 23, 1942 to February 2, 1943, Stalingrad led to 633, 000 battle deaths. Furthermore, Clodfelter points out that this does not even include deaths sustained by Italian, Romanian and Hungarian troops on the flanks of the battlefront.
