In mid-summer, an order was given to close the trenches. Why?

(A) ** citizens feared the spread of disease

(B) too many grieving widows were out on the field

(C) it was too hot to complete the task

(D) the president was coming and they needed to clean the town

EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Trenches were dirty, smelly and rampant with disease. For soldiers, life in the trenches meant living in fear. In fear of diseases like cholera and trench foot. And, of course, the constant fear of enemy attack.

Concept note-2: -Among the diseases and viruses that were most prevalent were influenza, typhoid, trench foot and trench fever.

Concept note-3: -Life in the trenches was very difficult because they were dirty and flooded in bad weather. Many of the trenches also had pests living in them, including rats, lice, and frogs. Rats in particular were a problem and ate soldier’s food as well as the actual soldiers while they slept.
