Concept note-1: -"The Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.” Martin Luther King Jr. is comparing the lives of blacks and whites. After a hundred years, the Negros are still living in poverty while others are enjoying prosperity.

Concept note-2: -He kicks off the speech with a metaphor, describing the Emancipation Proclamation as a “light of hope to millions of Negro slaves” (2.2). He continues in the same sentence by describing slavery as “[searing] in the flames of withering injustice” (2.2). The end of slavery was a “joyous daybreak” (2.2).

Concept note-3: -What Was the Message Behind the ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech? Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Dream” speech was a call for equality. It identified the faults of America and what measures were needed to make it a better place. A central theme throughout the speech was the importance of everyone being treated equally.
