Once slaves arrived in the Americas they were

EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -On reaching the Americas the crew of slave ships prepared the Africans for sale. They washed, shaved and rubbed them with palm oil to disguise sores and wounds caused by conditions on board. The captains usually sold their captives directly to planters or specialised wholesalers by auction.

Concept note-2: -A slave market is a place where slaves are bought and sold. These markets became a key phenomenon in the history of slavery.

Concept note-3: -Betts & Gregory, an auction house located on Franklin Street in Richmond, advertises the current prices for enslaved African Americans in March 1861. Prices ranged from $1, 600 to $1, 300, the latter price being for “Boys 4 feet high."
