we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. Lincoln means ____

(A) The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here but it can never forget what they did here.

(B) ** We must honor their sacrifice for the experiment of liberty and equality by taking renewed dedication to that cause. Americans must be renewed in their commitment to the mission of continuing democracy, continuing equality and continuing to fight for a United States of America.

(C) The seeds of the Civil War were really with the United States at its creation, that there’s an essential contradiction in the United States as it was born.

EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -What this quote is saying is by continuing the fight the audience would insure the deaths of those who died in battle would not be in vain. If they gave up on the cause of the war, then those who died would have died for a lost cause making their deaths in vain.

Concept note-2: -They are even carved on the walls inside the Lincoln Memorial: “We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain–that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom–and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

Concept note-3: -“Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.
