Concept note-2: -Lincoln urged his audience to fulfill the mission that Union soldiers had fought and died for: the realization of liberty and equality for all-ideals in our Declaration of Independence.

Concept note-3: -During the American Civil War, President Lincoln noted again and again that his purpose in fighting the South was to save the Union, not to free the slaves.

Concept note-4: -Lincoln’s decision to fight rather than to let the Southern states secede was not based on his feelings towards slavery. Rather, he felt it was his sacred duty as President of the United States to preserve the Union at all costs.
