Concept note-1: -That is the idea Lincoln refers to in this section of the speech: The Civil War was testing whether the United States, which was founded on liberty and equality, could survive.

Concept note-2: -Slavery, Lincoln stated, was the reason for the war: One eighth of the whole population were colored slaves. Not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the Southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest.

Concept note-3: -What is the main purpose of the Gettysburg Address? The main purpose of the Gettysburg Address at the time it was given was to commemorate a new National Cemetery at Gettysburg. It also gave Lincoln’s purpose for pushing on to win the Civil War-the abolition of slavery and the reunification of the Union.

Concept note-4: -Lincoln effectively use ethos throughout the speech and he uses other rhetorical devices to give ethos. Lincoln uses repetition by saying we multiple times, he said, ”we are engaged in a great civil war” “ We are met on a great battle-field of that war.” .”We have come to dedicate a portion of that field”.
