Concept note-1: -T he Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1–3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war’s turning point.

Concept note-2: -When was the Battle of Gettysburg fought? The Battle of Gettysburg began on Wednesday, July 1st 1863. The first shots were fired northwest of town early in the morning as advancing Confederates ran into Union cavalry pickets, although exactly when and where has been a matter of intense debate.

Concept note-3: -After his victory at Chancellorsville in Virginia, Confederate commander Lee decided to focus on invading the North in what he called the Gettysburg Campaign. The plan was to try and get some leverage in the North by forcing Northern politicians to stop prosecuting the war.

Concept note-4: -Gettysburg is located near the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and U.S. Route 15 about 25 miles (40 km) west of York, Pennsylvania and 35 miles (56 km) north of Frederick, Maryland.
