EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -On December 13, 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia repulses a series of attacks by General Ambrose Burnside’s Army of the Potomac at Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Concept note-2: -Confederate victory. The Union Army of the Potomac suffered more than 12, 500 casualties. Lee’s Confederate army counted approximately 6, 000 losses. The Federals retreated, losing an opportunity to advance further into Confederate territory and capture the capital of Richmond.

Concept note-3: -The Battle of Fredericksburg was a crushing defeat for the Union, whose soldiers fought courageously and well but fell victim to mismanagement by their generals, including confused orders from Burnside to Franklin.

Concept note-4: -Burnside’s plan was to cross the river quickly at Fredericksburg, Virginia, surprising General Robert E. Lee’s Confederate army, and proceed 35 miles to Richmond. General Burnside’s campaign at Fredericksburg did not go as planned, in part because the battle introduced obstacles his men had never before encountered.

Concept note-5: -In Appomattox, Virginia, on April 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrenders his 28, 000 Confederate troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the American Civil War.
