Concept note-1: -The 47-day Siege of Vicksburg eventually gave control of the Mississippi River-a critical supply line-to the Union, and was part of the Union’s successful Anaconda Plan to cut off all trade to the Confederacy.

Concept note-2: -During the next two months, Union forces rained cannon fire down upon Vicksburg. The Confederates suffered in the unbearable summer heat and were forced to ration their few remaining supplies. Quickly, Union troops dug tunnels under the fortifications and detonated explosives that devastated the city.

Concept note-3: -The citizens of Vicksburg first endured bombardment in 1862, but the major siege of the city occurred from May to July 1863. Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant commanded the forces besieging the city.

Concept note-4: -A New Independence Day When Confederate General John C. Pemberton surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, on July 4, 1863, the city of Vicksburg became a beacon of freedom in the heart of the Confederacy. The American Civil War would drag on for nearly two more years, but the war in Vicksburg was done.
