EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Lee and Jackson’s most celebrated victory also led to Jackson’s death. On May 2, Jackson marched his 28, 000 troops nearly 15 miles to attack Hooker’s exposed flank, inflicting massive Union casualties. Half of Hooker’s forces were destroyed.

Concept note-2: -His death brought deep sadness to the South and created a loss in the Confederate ranks that would never truly be filled. Stonewall Jackson’s presence radiated Southern heroism and commitment, and though he was just one man, his loss weighed heavily on Confederate morale.

Concept note-3: -Chancellorsville is known as Lee’s “perfect battle” because his risky decision to divide his army in the presence of a much larger enemy force resulted in a significant Confederate victory.

Concept note-4: -In spring of 1862, Confederate Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson unleashed a vigorous offensive that diverted thousands of Federal troops from their massive advance against the Confederate capital at Richmond.
