Concept note-1: -Scott, commanding general of the Union Army and Lee’s mentor, told Lincoln he wanted him for a top command, telling Secretary of War Simon Cameron that he had “entire confidence” in Lee. Lee accepted a promotion to colonel of the 1st Cavalry Regiment on March 28, again swearing an oath to the United States.

Concept note-2: -Originally called the Confederate Army of the Potomac, the confederate forces were renamed the Army of Northern Virginia when Robert E. Lee assumed command on June 1, 1862, in a battle to defend the city of Richmond from Union forces.

Concept note-3: -1862 On June 1 Lee is given command of the Army of Northern Virginia, the main Confederate army in the eastern theater of the war.

Concept note-4: -James Longstreet was a Confederate General who served as Robert E. Lee’s second-in-command for most of Lee’s tenure as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War (1861–1865).

Concept note-5: -Robert E. Lee is well known as a Confederate military general, but perhaps his greatest contribution to the United States was his effort to reunite the country following the American Civil War. In the opinions of his contemporaries and historians, Lee played a crucial role in restoring peace following the war.
