EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -On their escape from Washington, John Wilkes Booth and David Herold arrived at Mudd’s home at 4:00 a.m. on April 15, 1865. Mudd used his medical kit to treat Booth’s broken leg and allowed the two men to sleep in his home.
Concept note-2: -After shooting Lincoln, Booth jumped to the stage below Lincoln’s box seat. He landed hard, breaking his leg, before escaping to a waiting horse behind the theater.
Concept note-3: -Mudd diagnosed the broken fibula, fashioned a splint, and arranged for a pair of crutches to be delivered. Booth and Herold were extended hospitality and spent the remainder of the morning and much of the next day at Mudd’s farm.
Concept note-4: -The duo then continued southward, stopping before dawn on April 15 for treatment of Booth’s injured leg at the home of Dr. Samuel Mudd in St. Catharine, 25 miles (40 km) from Washington. Mudd later said that Booth told him the injury occurred when his horse fell.
