Concept note-1: -Joseph E. Johnston (1807-1891) was a U.S. military officer who served as a Confederate general during the Civil War (1861-65). A veteran of the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Johnston entered the Civil War as one of the South’s senior officers and was appointed a full general.

Concept note-2: -Union Major Generals William Tecumseh Sherman and James B. McPherson successfully defended against a Confederate offensive from Lieut. Gen. John Bell Hood on the eastern outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia.

Concept note-3: -Confederate Earthworks From such fortifications as this earthwork in front of Atlanta, Confederate general John B. Hood defended the city from Sherman’s attack. Sherman bombarded the city for five weeks, but Hood did not order an evacuation of Atlanta until all rail lines leading into the city had been destroyed.
