Concept note-1: -After January 1, 1863, every advance of federal troops expanded the domain of freedom. Moreover, the Proclamation announced the acceptance of black men into the Union Army and Navy, enabling the liberated to become liberators.

Concept note-2: -In 1862, President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation opened the door for African Americans to enlist in the Union Army. Although many had wanted to join the war effort earlier, they were prohibited from enlisting by a federal law dating back to 1792.

Concept note-3: -Moreover, the proclamation announced the acceptance of black men into the Union army and navy, enabling the liberated to become liberators. By the end of the war, almost 200, 000 black soldiers and sailors had fought for the Union and freedom.

Concept note-4: -It proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the ten Confederate states still in rebellion. It also decreed that freed slaves could be enlisted in the Union Army, thereby increasing the Union’s available manpower.

Concept note-5: -It allowed freed slaves to join the Union army and navy to help free those who were still slaves. By the end of the war, 200, 000 African Americans had fought for the Union.
