Concept note-2: -During the Civil War, black troops were often assigned tough, dirty jobs like digging trenches. Black regiments were commonly issued inferior equipment and were sometimes given inadequate medical treatment in racially segregated hospitals. African-American troops were paid less than white soldiers.
Concept note-3: -The 54th’s assault on Fort Wagner became the first time the all-Black unit fought alongside White troops. In addition, the 54th received the honor of leading the charge. Any regiment approaching the fort would certainly face heavy casualties.
