EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -The Confederacy initially implemented a cordon strategy or cordon defense, meaning that it tried to defend the entire scope of the Confederacy, and soon had troops scattered from Virginia to Texas. Politically, Confederate president Jefferson Davis had little choice but to do this.

Concept note-2: -The South could have won simply by not being conquered. It did not have to occupy a foot of ground outside its borders. The South’s best hope for success was outlasting Lincoln, and deep schisms among Northerners throughout the war kept that hope alive.

Concept note-3: -Based on your reading of this document, what will Confederate troops have to do in order to win the war? To win the war they cannot shrink from any sacrifice which they may be called on to make, nor can there be a reasonable doubt of their final success.

Concept note-4: -How did both the Union and the Confederate armies build up their troops? They relied on help from volunteers to serve in the army. How did life change for civilians in both the North and the South during the Civil War?
