Concept note-1: -Lee and Confederate President Jefferson Davis chose to invade Maryland, partly based on the belief that the people of the state would support them. Maryland was a so-called “Border State": a slave state that remained in the Union.
Concept note-2: -Fought in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, Lee’s daring decision to face a force twice his size-Union General Joseph Hooker’s Army of the Potomac-by splitting his own army in two made the Battle of Chancellorsville go down in history as Lee’s most significant tactical victory.
Concept note-3: -General Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia entered the final stage of a protracted season of campaigning as it marched toward Maryland during the first week of September 1862.
