Concept note-1: -The North wanted to go to war to save the Union. At first, ending slavery was not a goal of the war. People in the South felt they were fighting to save their way of life. They felt that they were fighting to gain their freedom.
Concept note-2: -The North was fighting for reunification, and the South for independence. But as the war progressed, the Civil War gradually turned into a social, economic and political revolution with unforeseen consequences. The Union war effort expanded to include not only reunification, but also the abolition of slavery.
