Concept note-3: -First Battle of Bull Run: Background Following the event, President Abraham Lincoln issued a call for volunteers to serve in the army. Concept note-4: -On April 15, 1861, at the start of the American Civil War, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln called for a 75, 000-man militia to serve for three months following the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter.

Concept note-5: -While most historians point to Fort Sumter as the beginning of the war, some suggest the war didn’t really begin until Lincoln’s call for troops. His action spurred four of the “holdout” states-Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas-to secede from the Union and join the Confederacy.
