Concept note-1: -President Abraham Lincoln removed McDowell from command of the Army of the Potomac and replaced him with General George McClellan. Despite the defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run, McDowell remained with the Army of the Potomac as a corps commander.

Concept note-2: -A tortured relationship ends when President Abraham Lincoln removes General George B. McClellan from command of the Army of the Potomac.

Concept note-3: -In this order issued on November 5, 1862, one day after the congressional mid-term elections, U.S. president Abraham Lincoln relieved Union general George B. McClellan, a potential political rival, of command of the Army of the Potomac.

Concept note-4: -On November 1, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln names George Brinton McClellan general in chief of the Union army, replacing the aged and infirm Winfield Scott.

Concept note-5: -Following his retirement from the army, General McDowell exercised his fondness for landscape gardening, serving as Park Commissioner of San Francisco, California until his death from heart attack on May 4, 1885.
