EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -After four bloody years of conflict, the United States defeated the Confederate States. In the end, the states that were in rebellion were readmitted to the United States, and the institution of slavery was abolished nation-wide.
Concept note-2: -The Union won the American Civil War. The war effectively ended in April 1865 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.
Concept note-3: -Confederate soldiers were fighting to achieve a separate and independent country based on what they called “Southern institutions, ” the chief of which was the institution of slavery.
Concept note-4: -Known in the north as the Battle of Bull Run and in the South as the Battle of Manassas, this battle, fought on July 21 1861 in Virginia was the first major battle of the Civil War. It was a Confederate victory.
