Concept note-1: -Each side had about 18, 000 poorly trained and poorly led troops. It was a Confederate victory, followed by a disorganized retreat of the Union forces.

Concept note-2: -MANASSAS, VIRGINIA, JULY 21, 1861. Union forces 32, 000, casualties 2, 708; Confederate forces 35, 000, casualties 1, 982. Also known as First Bull Run, this tactical Confederate victory left Southerners overconfident and stiffened Northern resolution.

Concept note-3: -On July 21, 1861, in the first major land battle of the Civil War, a large Union force under General Irvin McDowell is routed by a Confederate army under General Pierre G.T. Beauregard.
