Concept note-1: -The Platt Amendment stipulated the conditions for U.S. intervention in Cuban affairs and permitted the United States to lease or buy lands for the purpose of establishing naval bases (the main one was Guantánamo Bay) and coaling stations in Cuba.

Concept note-2: -Orville Hitchcock Platt, (born July 19, 1827, Washington, Connecticut, U.S.-died April 21, 1905, Washington, Connecticut), U.S. senator from Connecticut (1879–1905) who introduced the Platt Amendment, which became the basis for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Cuba following the Spanish-American War of 1898.

Concept note-3: -The Platt Amendment’s conditions prohibited the Cuban Government from entering into any international treaty that would compromise Cuban independence or allow foreign powers to use the island for military purposes.

Concept note-4: -As a condition of independence, the United States forced Cuba to grant a continuing U.S. right to intervene on the island in accordance with the Platt Amendment. The amendment was repealed in 1934 when the United States and Cuba signed a Treaty of Relations.

Concept note-5: -The Platt Amendment came about as a result of the Spanish-American War, which occurred in 1898. During the roughly four months that the war lasted, the United States had a large military presence in Cuba, which it was ready to use to protect the US against Spanish attacks and protect US economic interests in Cuba.
